The Match...
The first goal of the match went to Southampton. As Saints caught Walsall on a quick counter attack through Matt Paterson when he had to think quickly to play a lovely ball for Rickie Lambert who blasted home from outside Walsall's area which gave Saints a well earned half-time lead. 1-0 to the Home side.
Saints tadded a very well worked second when the midfield kept possession between them and eventually new Southampton signing Sun Jihai spotted David Connolly's run who he produced a great through ball which carved Walsall open and Connolly placed his shot into the bottom left corner of Walsall's goal. 2-0 to the Saints
Walsall then got one back from a big 'hoof' up field which Southampton CB Wayne Thomas misjudged and Deeney was only too happy to get on the end of it and score. 2-1 - A Walsall back in the game.
Southampton had other ideas though, as Nathan Tyson who hadn't been on the pitch long, showed his pace to put Walsall 'Keeper Ince under pressure in which he made a mistake and Tyson squared it to young Matt Paterson who kept a cool head to place it in the net for 3-1 on 85 mintues.
