Walsall v Southampton - FA Cup 3rd Round

Wallsall 1-1 Southampton - FA Cup 3rd Round.

Saturday 2nd January, 2010

Attendance - 5,259

Southampton travel to Walsall for the third round of the FA Cup. Last time this fixture was played it finished 2-2 with Adam Lallana and Nathan Tyson getting on the scoresheet for Saints.

How they lined up...

Selection changes...

-Dan Harding makes way for new signing Falorian Marange at LB and has to settle for he bench.
-Jospeh Mills replaces injured Adam Lallana at LM for only his 7th start of the Season.
-Jake Thomson replaces injured Dean Hammond in the middle.
-Nathan Tyson is at RM for today's match, in the hope of using his pace down the wing.

Match Report...

-Rickie Lambert hit the bar on 29th minute from 45 yards out!
-Rickie Lambert again came close on the 44th minute with a thunderous drive at goal just outside Walsall's 18-yard box but Clayton Ince produced a great save low down to deny a first half lead for the Saints.
-A minute later Jake Thomson gave a perfect through ball to Lambert for him to shoot from range but it went out into the side-netting.
-Then once again, the final move of the half, Thomson putting another fantastic through ball in front of Nathan Tyson who did well to beat Walsall's offside trap but couldn't find the finish and was eventually scrambled away for a clearance.

Half Time

-Saints switched from 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 with Tyson coming from RM to ST.
-Walsall started the 2nd half brightly having a few decent goal scoring oppertunities.
-The best 2nd half chance from both teams came from Southampton, with Saganowski exposing a gap in Walsall's defence and Morgan Schneidlin putting him through cutting their defence open, Saganowski's shot cannoned off the crossbar leaving GK Ince helpless.
-Next Walsall's Weston was fed the ball by Bradley for him to have his cheeky shot blocked my Saints' Jaidi on 60 minutes.
-Saints then swapped Mills for Harding at left mid.
-Walsall's Troy Deeney then produced a great finish from 15 yards out as he teased Keita, turned and shot to the left of Saints' goal beating Davis. 1-0 to Walsall.
-Saints then made another change, taking Striker Nathan Tyson off for David Connolly to try to spark a response.
-Saints replied on 74 minutes with an excellent Southampton move, showing their class. With Schneiderlin playing an intergral part. The Frenchman picked the ball up on the half-way line, taking it 20 yards and passing it to Evanilson down the right, he then passed it into the danger zone to Thomson on the edge on Walsall's 18-yard-box past Matt Richards and giving it to sub Connolly who dribbled it past Walsall defender Hughes, as he attempted to close him down, therefore leaving a gap in the Walsall defence and feeding it through to Schneiderlin who continued his run to start the move off and placing it almost first time to the right of Walsall 'Keeper Ince. Game on! 1-1.
Despite a good late spell of possession for Saints, and a few decent chances the score at The Bescot Stadium finished 1-1. A replay will now be arranged at St. Mary's.

Disappointed - Lambert looks on in disappointment as his side fail to put chances away.
